Russian Drone Strikes Kyiv School as Aerial Campaign Intensifies
A Russian drone struck a school in Kyiv on Thursday, October 1, damaging the building as the Ukrainian capital faced another wave of aerial attacks.
Children and staff were inside the school’s shelter when the drone hit, Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klitschko said, according to the Associated Press. No casualties were reported at the school. The drone’s warhead did not explode.
The strike damaged the building’s exterior, leaving a large hole in a brick wall, alongside smashed windows and burn marks, AP reported. Ukrainian officials said the unexploded munition was later removed by bomb-disposal specialists.
The incident took place in Kyiv’s Solomianskyi district. While those inside the school escaped injury, the strike showed how aerial attacks can endanger ordinary places where people work and learn—even when residents follow shelter instructions.
Kyiv faces further aerial attacks
The school was one of several sites affected during a broader Russian air assault on Kyiv. Reuters reported that drones also struck a key bridge over the Dnipro River, triggering fires and disrupting transport.
The reported school strike came amid an intensifying campaign of Russian drone and missile attacks on Ukraine. In the days surrounding the incident, Ukrainian officials reported attacks on energy infrastructure and other sites. The continuing strikes have heightened concerns about the safety of civilians and pressure on Ukraine’s air defences as colder weather approaches.
The available reports do not establish that the school itself was the intended target. BBNN has not independently verified the circumstances of the strike.
Unexploded warhead removed
The fact that the warhead did not detonate prevented a potentially more serious outcome at the school. Ukrainian reporting said bomb-disposal specialists removed it for controlled disposal. Authorities have not reported casualties at the school.
The incident is a reminder that an unexploded munition can remain dangerous after a strike. People should avoid approaching drone debris or unexploded objects and follow instructions from local emergency services.
BBNN will update this report if Ukrainian authorities release further verified information.
