Paramount Completes Warner Bros. Discovery Takeover, Creating Skydance Media Giant

By • October 6, 2026 • 8:19 am

Paramount Skydance has completed its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, bringing two major Hollywood studios and a broad collection of television, news and streaming businesses under one company. The combined business is called Skydance Corporation, and it began trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker SKYD.

The deal unites film studios and franchises including Warner Bros., Paramount Pictures, DC, Harry Potter, Mission: Impossible and Top Gun. Its portfolio also includes television and streaming services such as CBS, CNN, HBO Max, Paramount+, discovery+ and Pluto TV. The exact mix of brands and operations is broad, spanning film, television, news, sports, games and consumer products.

A large deal with a large debt burden

The reported value depends on what is being counted. The Associated Press described the takeover as an $81 billion acquisition, while it said the combined transaction amounted to about $111 billion including debt. Reuters reported a figure of about $110 billion for the takeover. These figures reflect different ways of presenting the transaction’s value and debt.

David Ellison leads the combined company as chief executive, with Ynon Kreiz as co-CEO. Reuters reported that the company carries roughly $80 billion in debt and is targeting at least $6 billion in cost savings over three years. The scale of that debt and the work required to combine the businesses will be central challenges as Skydance tries to compete with Netflix, Disney and major technology companies.

Questions about competition and editorial independence

The merger creates a much larger entertainment group, but its size has also drawn scrutiny. Critics in Hollywood and elsewhere have raised concerns about industry consolidation, potential job cuts and whether audiences and creative workers will have fewer choices. State legal challenges and a lawsuit from a writers’ union were settled before the deal closed, clearing the way for completion.

The future of CNN and CBS News under common ownership will also attract attention. Skydance has said it will establish an editorial-independence board as part of commitments tied to the merger; questions remain about how those safeguards will operate in practice.

For viewers, the immediate impact may not be a sudden change in programming or subscriptions. The longer-term questions are whether Skydance combines its streaming services, changes content availability, adjusts prices or restructures its television and studio operations. The company’s plans will determine how this historic media merger affects audiences, employees and the wider entertainment industry.
