Iran Reportedly Sends $200 Million to Hezbollah for Displaced Lebanese

Hezbollah has received a reported $200 million from Iran to help Lebanese people displaced by this year’s war with Israel, according to two people with direct knowledge of the transfer who spoke to Reuters. The claim has not been confirmed by Iran, and the United States disputes it.

The sources told Reuters that the money arrived in Lebanon in September. They said Hezbollah intended to provide an initial payment of $3,000 to eligible families, prioritising people whose villages had been destroyed or were inaccessible. One source estimated that around 50,000 families could be prioritised. Hezbollah had not yet publicly detailed a distribution plan when Reuters published its report.

A Hezbollah official confirmed to Reuters that the group had secured an amount of money and planned to announce how it would be distributed, but did not identify where the funds came from. The Iranian Foreign Ministry, Iran’s mission in Geneva and the Lebanese government had not responded to Reuters’ requests for comment at the time of publication. Reuters said its sources gave no details about the route used to move the money.

The U.S. government rejected the account. A State Department spokesperson called the reported funding false, while a Treasury spokesperson said Iran was facing financial and transfer constraints. The source of the reported funds and whether the full amount will reach displaced families therefore remain unverified.

The reported transfer comes after hundreds of thousands of people were displaced by fighting in Lebanon. Israel’s bombardment and ground operations followed Hezbollah’s entry into the wider regional conflict on March 2, according to Reuters. The group has said it plans to support housing for people displaced by the war, but the report noted that many affected families had received little assistance from Hezbollah so far.

If the reported money is distributed as described, it would provide some direct financial support to families whose homes or communities were damaged or cut off. The claim remains based on unnamed sources, and the amount, transfer route and distribution have not been independently verified.
