Chinese Militia Fishing Vessel Detected off Taiwan’s East Coast Near Hualien

A Chinese fishing vessel identified by Taiwanese officials as part of China’s maritime militia was detected off Taiwan’s eastern coast near Hualien, according to a surveillance report reviewed by Reuters. The sighting took place in mid-August but was reported publicly on October 8.

Taiwanese surveillance company Apex Aviation said its aircraft detected the fishing boat, Minfudingyu 07902, operating in the area with a Chinese coast guard cutter and a research vessel. The company’s report included radar, infrared and vessel-tracking data. Taiwan officials confirmed the three vessels were operating near the island and said the fishing boat had been identified as part of China’s maritime militia fleet.

The exact date of the sighting was not disclosed. Apex said the vessels were more than 30 nautical miles from Hualien’s coast and spread across an area roughly 10 nautical miles in radius. The company’s security director said the single surveillance tracking could not establish the vessels’ mission or determine whether they were coordinating with one another.

Taiwan’s defence ministry said Chinese law-enforcement and research activity could be used as cover to expand operations around the island and create what it described as an appearance of jurisdiction. Two Taiwanese officials told Reuters the vessels were being monitored; one said the fishing boat was operating in coordination with Chinese coast guard activity. China’s defence ministry and Taiwan Affairs Office did not respond to Reuters’ requests for comment.

The location matters because Taiwan regards its eastern waters as important to potential supply routes from partners in the event of a blockade or conflict. Taiwanese officials say they are watching a range of Chinese activity—including coast guard, research and civilian vessels—as part of preparations for possible pressure on maritime access. These are Taiwanese security concerns; the surveillance report did not establish that this particular group was preparing a blockade.

The report adds to scrutiny of China’s activity around Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its territory. Taiwan rejects that claim. The sighting does not, on its own, establish the vessels’ purpose, but it is likely to intensify attention on maritime security along Taiwan’s Pacific-facing coast.
