Our Editorial Standards.
Our proposed editorial principles set out how BBNN approaches the gathering, verification, publication and correction of news and information.
Accuracy. Independence. Accountability.
The foundations of responsible journalism.
These four principles provide the foundation for BBNN’s editorial decision-making and its relationship with readers.
Accuracy
Verify information, distinguish facts from claims and correct significant errors promptly.
Independence
Make editorial decisions without improper influence from advertisers, sponsors or other interests.
Fairness
Represent relevant perspectives accurately and give subjects appropriate opportunities to respond.
Accountability
Explain editorial decisions where appropriate, address complaints and make corrections transparent.
Where Truth Breaks First.
Breaking news requires both speed and care. BBNN’s editorial approach is to prioritize verified information, identify uncertainty, distinguish reporting from opinion and update coverage as facts develop.
On This Page
1. Purpose and Scope
These Editorial Standards describe the principles intended to guide BBNN’s journalism, including news articles, live reporting, photographs, videos, interviews and other editorial content.
They are intended to apply to journalists, editors, contributors and other individuals involved in producing editorial material for BBNN.
Specific platforms and formats may require additional procedures appropriate to their operations.
2. Accuracy and Verification
Accuracy should take priority over speed, competition and audience engagement.
Before publication, factual claims should be checked against reliable evidence appropriate to the story.
Reporters and editors should seek original documents, direct observations and knowledgeable sources whenever practicable.
Information that cannot be independently verified should be clearly identified as unconfirmed when there is a legitimate editorial reason to report it.
Facts, allegations, estimates and opinions should be distinguished so readers can understand the evidence supporting each statement.
3. Breaking News
Breaking news often develops before all relevant facts are available.
BBNN’s proposed approach is to publish confirmed information, explain what remains unknown and update reports as new evidence becomes available.
Early figures, including casualty estimates and other rapidly changing information, should be attributed to their sources and updated when appropriate.
Speculation, misleading headlines and unsupported claims should not be presented as established facts.
Breaking news principle: Publish what is verified, identify what is uncertain and correct the record when necessary.
4. Editorial Independence
Editorial decisions should be based on newsworthiness, reliable evidence and the public interest.
Advertisers, sponsors, business partners and other external parties should not determine the conclusions of independent news reporting.
Commercial relationships that create a relevant conflict should be disclosed where necessary for readers to understand the coverage.
Journalists and editors should be able to raise concerns about inappropriate interference through an established editorial process.
5. Fairness and Impartiality
BBNN should represent relevant perspectives accurately, provide appropriate context and avoid misleading omissions.
Individuals and organizations facing significant allegations should ordinarily be offered a reasonable opportunity to respond before publication, when practicable.
Fairness does not require giving unsupported claims the same weight as well-established evidence.
Political and public-affairs coverage should distinguish verified facts from allegations, campaign statements, analysis and opinion.
Journalists should avoid allowing personal interests or preferences to distort factual reporting.
6. Sources and Attribution
Sources should be identified whenever it is appropriate and safe to do so.
Reports should distinguish firsthand reporting from information obtained through other publishers, official statements, social media or third parties.
Material obtained from another publisher should be appropriately attributed and used consistently with copyright and licensing requirements.
Sources should be assessed for reliability, proximity to the events, relevant expertise and potential conflicts of interest.
7. Anonymous and Confidential Sources
Anonymous sourcing may be justified when information is important to the public interest and identifying a source could expose them to a credible risk.
The source’s identity and basis of knowledge should, where possible, be known to an appropriate editor.
Information provided anonymously should receive additional scrutiny and independent corroboration where practicable.
The reasons for granting anonymity should be explained to readers where doing so does not compromise source protection.
Promises of confidentiality should not be made without understanding the practical, technical and legal implications.
8. Corrections, Clarifications and Updates
BBNN should correct significant factual errors promptly after they have been verified.
Material corrections should be clearly identified so readers can understand what changed.
Developing stories may be updated as new facts emerge. Updates should not silently conceal significant earlier errors.
Where an article is substantially revised, an appropriate editor’s note or correction notice should be considered.
Requests for corrections may be submitted through the BBNN Contact page .
9. Headlines, Images and Visual Accuracy
Headlines should accurately represent the content of the accompanying report.
Photographs, graphics and videos should not be presented in ways that materially mislead readers about events or context.
Archive images, illustrations and illustrative footage should be labeled when necessary to avoid confusion.
Significant visual alterations that could affect factual interpretation should be disclosed.
Images of distressing events should be selected with consideration for their news value, accuracy, dignity and potential harm.
10. Opinion, Analysis and Commentary
News reporting, analysis and opinion serve different purposes and should be clearly distinguished.
News reporting should prioritize verified facts, relevant context and accurate attribution.
Analysis may explain the significance of events using evidence and clearly identified interpretation.
Opinion content may express a writer’s perspective, but factual claims should remain accurate and appropriately supported.
The views of an opinion contributor do not necessarily represent BBNN’s institutional position.
11. Conflicts of Interest
Journalists, editors and contributors should disclose financial, personal or professional interests that could materially affect their reporting.
Relevant conflicts should be addressed through disclosure, reassignment or other appropriate editorial safeguards.
Gifts, payments and other benefits from sources should not be accepted in exchange for favorable editorial coverage.
Material relationships affecting the interpretation of published content should be disclosed to readers where appropriate.
12. Advertising, Sponsorship and Paid Content
Advertising and sponsored material should be distinguishable from independent editorial content.
Commercial partners should not be permitted to purchase favorable independent news coverage.
Sponsored articles, branded content and paid promotions should be labeled clearly enough for readers to understand their commercial nature.
Advertising and partnership arrangements may be subject to separate commercial terms.
Business enquiries can be directed to our Advertise With Us page.
13. Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technology
AI-assisted tools may support tasks such as transcription, translation, research organization and drafting.
Their outputs should not be treated as independently verified evidence.
Journalists and editors remain responsible for checking factual claims, quotations, sources and other material before publication.
AI-generated or materially AI-altered photographs, audio and video should be clearly identified when used in an editorial context.
Confidential source information and sensitive personal data should not be entered into external AI services without appropriate authorization and safeguards.
14. Privacy, Dignity and Sensitive Reporting
Journalists should consider privacy, dignity and the public interest when reporting on individuals.
Particular care should be taken when reporting on children, victims of violence, vulnerable individuals and people affected by traumatic events.
Graphic images and sensitive personal details should only be published where there is sufficient editorial justification.
Allegations of wrongdoing should be reported with appropriate attribution and respect for the presumption of innocence where applicable.
15. User-Generated and Social Media Content
Social media posts, eyewitness videos and other user-generated materials can provide valuable information.
Their authenticity, original source, location and timing should be checked where relevant before publication.
Viral popularity alone is not evidence that a claim is accurate.
Copyright, consent, privacy and potential risks to contributors should be considered when publishing third-party material.
16. Editorial Oversight and Accountability
Editorial oversight should be proportionate to the sensitivity, complexity and potential impact of each story.
Reports involving serious allegations, significant legal risks or sensitive sources should receive appropriate review before publication.
Contributors should have a clear process for escalating verification, ethical and editorial concerns.
BBNN should periodically review its editorial procedures as its newsroom and digital platforms develop.
17. Complaints, Corrections and Reader Feedback
Readers, sources and individuals mentioned in BBNN coverage should have an accessible way to raise concerns about accuracy, fairness or other editorial matters.
Complaints should identify the relevant article or broadcast, explain the concern and, where possible, include supporting information.
BBNN should assess complaints fairly and make corrections or clarifications where warranted.
