Clashes Erupt in Togo as Protesters Demand President’s Resignation
Lomé, Togo — July 1, 2025
Widespread clashes broke out across Togo’s capital, Lomé, on Monday as thousands of demonstrators took to the streets demanding the immediate resignation of President Faure Gnassingbé. The protest, which began as a peaceful rally, escalated into violent confrontations between demonstrators and heavily armed security forces.
According to eyewitness accounts, tensions flared when protesters marched toward government buildings chanting slogans like “Faure must go!” and “Enough is enough!” Riot police responded with tear gas, rubber bullets, and water cannons to disperse the crowd.
Protesters hurled stones and set barricades alight in parts of the city, leading to a chaotic afternoon. Several people were injured, with reports of at least 12 civilians hospitalized and dozens more arrested. Human rights observers in the area described the police response as “excessive and disproportionate.”
The protest was organized by a coalition of opposition parties and youth activists who accuse President Gnassingbé’s administration of corruption, abuse of power, and democratic backsliding. The president, who has ruled since 2005 following the death of his father, has faced growing pressure over the years to step down and allow political transition.
“The people of Togo have had enough. We want free and fair elections, and we want our voices to matter,” said organizer Mireille Ahoévia, speaking to BBNN. “Today’s protest is just the beginning. We will not stop until we are heard.”
The government has yet to issue an official statement regarding Monday’s clashes, but the Ministry of Security has accused the protesters of “inciting violence and disrupting public order.”
International observers, including ECOWAS and the African Union, have called for calm and urged the Togolese government to engage in peaceful dialogue with its citizens.
As the country enters a politically volatile period, more demonstrations are expected in the coming days. BBNN will continue to provide updates as the story develops.
